Office Depot is the latest chain store forced to close some of their shops. Make no mistake, Office Depot is BIG. They have a ton of stores, and they are reportedly only closing 112 locations.
Banking has been hit, real estate and manufacturing too, and so consumer spending is down, and so almost all businesses are experiencing a downturn in sales. So its no surprise that Office Depot, which sells office supplies, technology, and furniture to big and small businesses alike, is having to make some tough decisions.
For manufacturing, the number of plants getting closed doesn't seem too big, but the employees getting laid off is scary. For retail, its the number of locations, and you can pretty much assume that when a lot of stores are closed, the employees who worked there will be let loose.
Therefore, along with the store closings, many employees are bound to be laid off and find themselves along with many, many others in the unemployment line. Hang in there everybody, we'll get through this!
