Aldi- a discount grocer

Now I just wrote a small bit on Trade Joe's - and when I was looking for a link to show some coverage on that great impeding event, I stumble across a posting saying that TJ's and Aldi were both coming to Rhode Island this year. So I stopped... "what's Aldi?"

A little research and I found it is a discount grocer that was started in Germany in 1948 by two brothers Karl and Theo Albrecht. Apparently they keep costs low by selling everything under their own, no fills label, they have no baggers and charge for bags (typically what you see in Europe), don't take checks or credit cards- just cash, debit or food stamps. They are also owned by the same parent company that owns Trader Joe's, which is a sort of gourmet discount grocer of sorts.

My interest is piqued, and with one open in Rumford, RI not far from me I am definitely going to investigate soon.

Aldi comes to RI

What a coincidence! I just found out about Aldi a few weeks ago while bouncing through Wikipedia. Seems like a good store.
