The 2007 tax holiday is approaching in Massachusetts and will occur on August 11th and 12th, so the furniture retailers like Bernie & Phil’s and Jordan’s are stepping up their advertising spending. While I made an effort to hold off on buying stuff until the holiday in past years, I’ve stopped bothering as the stores can be such a mob scene during these days. I’ve found appliance stores to be the worst, whereas smaller stores like CVS, Linens & Things, and Marshall’s to be less crowded.
No Corporate Purchases? The Massachusetts Sales Tax Holiday excludes purchases made by businesses, though some stores will circumvent this restriction by offering a 5% discount to offset the tax levy.
Other exclusions The sales tax holiday also excludes the following purchases:
- Automobiles, motorcycles, and all motor vehicles
- motorboats
- meals
- telecommunications services
- gas
- steam
- electricity
- tobacco products
That’s too bad steam isn’t included - I was hold out on buying a bunch of steam until this weekend! Just kidding. I would think that alcohol would be excluded as well, but I guess not. And I wonder about sailboats - are they excluded?
